It would be giving much away to say that the Observation Run will be along the western side of picturesque Tamar Valley.  It will start at the Penny Royal Motel and take you through a tortuous route north and leave you to with choices of spending the rest of your afternoon exploring Beaconsfield, Beauty Point, George Town, the Pipers River vineyards or just enjoying a long leisurely chat with friends in one of the many cafes.

Remember there is no prize for speed so take your time, take in the scenery but remember to be back for dinner!

Sites to see along the way include:

Tamar Island Wetlands, a unique urban wetland reserve 10 minutes from Launceston. More information about the wetlands is also available from Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service

Grindelwald.  This is a Swiss village resort with a restaurant and café

Vineyards along the way include Ninth Island, Moore’s Hill, Tamar Ridge & Iron Pot Bay

Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre.  History of gold mining centred around Beaconsfield.

There are restaurant, cafes, hotels & bakeries for you to choose from along the way.

Other places to visit in the Tamar Valley:

A detour from the observation run can take you to Beauty Point where you can visit the Seahorse World, or the Platypus House.

George Town on the eastern side of the Tamar River has the Low Head Pilot Station and Museum and York Cove Bar & Restaurant to name a few.

The Tamar Valley hosts many of the states premium wineries.  They are mainly located in 4 broad areas.  They are just north of Launceston around Rosevears, a little further north around the Batman Bridge and across the north coast east of George Town.  A recent area developed is at Relbia on the southern outskirts of Launceston.  See the Tamar Valley Wine Route website for more information, and a detailed map of the Tamar Valley Wine Region is also available at their site.
